20th April The big outside world Puppy Picnic.

The weather has finally obliged and turned warmer and drier. So today the pups went outside with their mother and had a puppy picnic in the crate in the garden. We have a lot of kites and buzzards here and they often fly low over the garden so the crate is for protection as they are still small pups.
When people and their mother and grandmother are outside they can come out of the crate and explore safely. Below Granny Alice gives some loving advice to our little adventurers.

Well not so much changed as changed how the pups access it. Miss has had enough of lying down and now is standing for them to suckle. they have quite a task and often tumble over.

As the pups have been growing up they have started to try to play together, and with a lot of new toys given to them they have decided the best thing to do is to use them to sleep with or use as pillows!
Below the little fat belly is shown in true flatcoat fashion to the world. Toys are so tiring!

So Many beds and cushions to choose from... How is a mother to choose which is best, most comfortable and nice and cosy for her pups? Miss thinks trying them all out works, after all variety is the spice of life is it not?

The puppies appear to think the puppy food tastes very nice it took them a very short time to eat everything. A few needed help with the last bits and Alice and Miss both enjoyed the cleaning up afterwards.

So innocent.... especially when asleep! They are growing by the hour it seems. They are big pups and are keeping us all on our toes with feeding and cleaning. Sleep seems a bit of a luxury, which we can only aspire to! lol

Sometime over the night of the 9th and 10th Miss Chief decided she could not feed her babies unless they were on her sleeping cushion. So it had to be added to the pen! Eeek!!!

The big Move 8th April 2019

The first big move took place today. The puppies were moved from the bedroom to the living room as they are getting more mobile now.

This is a small pen mostly covered by vet bed, and a litter tray is put into the pen so they can start to work on house training. Puppies will not soil their bed so adding a litter tray they will use it. To start with they will poo in the tray and sometimes manage to make it there to wee, but until they are older they will still have a few accidents weeing on the bedding.

Chris writes, 'I have attached pictures of Angus (left) and Oban (below).
Angus was a fantastic dog a tireless worker and a real character he would never forget that maggot ridden rabbit or pheasant I had taken off him after what he considered a great retrieve and would climb barbed wire fences with ease up until 12 years of age to bring back to me what he thought I wanted – his trade mark was what we called "half smiles" he would greet you with  one side of his mouth curled up so much he had trouble breathing!
Oban (Alices brother) is his fathers double very very intelligent probably more so than Angus (gets it from his mother), a great escapologist, opens doors and lets himself in or out. His latest trick came about one evening after locking him out by mistake I saw a paw coming through a hole cut in a solid wooden door he was, with success, unlatching the door from the outside, again he is a good worker soft mouthed and quiet at the peg and has been very easy to train.

Field Trial Champion Werrion Redwing of Collyers was owned by the late Hon. Mrs Amelia Jessel. Noonie as she was called is in the 7th/8th generation of the pedigree quite a way back. She was our first FT champion after WWII and only one British dog has been made up to FT champion since then. Amelia was always encouraging to novice handlers and came to be a guest trainer at the original Bucks Flatcoat training group, which was held at Dinton Hall and run by myself and ex husband back in the early 1980's. Noonie is another dog who made it well into their double digit age.
Exclyst Sequin This pretty little girl won 1 challenge certificate and 2 reserve challenge certificates in the show ring. She is dam to one field trial winner, 4 champion dogs, and two overseas champions. She is a grand daughter to one of my favourite dogs Ch. Exclyst Bernard

Sizing them up! 5th & 6th April

16/4/2019

The puppies are growing fast now and are a hungry bunch, so sleep is limited! They are are tiny alarms clocks prone to going off every two hours and the noise they make is enough to wake the neighbourhood!
Picture
Comparing them to the Flatcoated Retriever Society newsletter which is A5 size gives you some idea of their current growth. This was taken on the 5th.
Picture
Thinking that perhaps not everyone is a member of the Flatcoated Retriever Society I thought I would picture them with a copy of the Metro newspaper which is a tabloid newspaper in the UK. This picture was taken on the 6th and they look like they grew overnight!
